1/2G (Teacher: Lyn Geldard)Grade 1/2G teacher

Grade 1/2G is a delightful group of 19 highly motivated students who are very excited about learning. We have ten Grade 1 students and nine grade 2 students, nine girls and ten boys in our class. Each day we start our Literacy Block by practising reading and spelling some high frequency words to strengthen our literacy skills and then we read to a partner for five minutes, giving feedback on important aspects of reading and asking questions to check on comprehension. We enjoy writing about our experiences, feelings, themes, the pets that visit our classroom and all the fun type activities we have at school. Each day one of us takes Winnie-The-Pooh, Tigger, Piglet or Eeyore home for an adventure.  We write about the things we do together in a special book and then we share it with the class the next day. We work with 1/2M in our Reading Groups so that all levels of ability can receive maximum experience with carefully graded reading material in Guided Reading Sessions and in our independent activities. Reading is a lot of fun and we enjoy sharing the amazing things that we learn. We look forward to our Maths sessions because we have a lot of fun when we model the concepts we are learning about and talk about the way in which we think and solve problems. Our thematic studies have been really exciting this year. In Term 1 we learnt about the importance of rules and we spent a lot of time talking and acting out many Values that are important in our lives. We had a visiting group that taught us even more about this topic. In Term 2 we transformed our room into a leafy Zoo Habitat and had enormous fun making animals to live in the environment. We learned so much and we taught each other a lot about many different animals when we presented our Zoo Projects.

One of the highlights was our “Zoo Concert” where we dressed up and sang lots of animal songs. Our parents loved it and we felt really special. We had a “Jungle Lunch” with our parents and friends.

We had a very educational day at the Werribee Zoo. The tour on the Safari Bus was very informative and we learned so much when we got to handle a green tree frog and a ringtail possum in the special classroom at the Zoo.

In Term 3 we are studying “Under The Sea” and our room is full of colourful sea creatures. We even surprise our teacher with the knowledge we have about these amazing creatures. We are going to Imax Theatre to see a 3D movie about “The Deep” and we are looking forward to visiting the Aquarium.

In Term 4 we learn about the safe use of medicines and when the Life Education Van visits, we talk about nutrition and making healthy choices about our bodies and the lifestyle we lead. It will soon be Christmas again with all the wonderful activities we do and the interesting things we learn about other people’s culture. It will be time to take another step forward in our learning journey but we will always remember the fun we have had in 1/2G and the friends we have made along the way. We will always be thankful to have had the caring assistance from our Teacher Aide, Mrs Vicki Godden, our Trainee, Miss Amy Carter, our student teacher Miss Kathryn Shiels, our IT Trainee Miss Winter Dunstone, our Art Teacher, Mr Mullarvey and our L.O.T.E. Teacher, Miss Johnston. Thanks for a great year!
