Grade 3/4J (Teacher: Bernice (Nona) Johnston) 3/4j Teacher

Welcome to Grade 3/4J. Grade 3/4J is a composite grade where we enjoy working together as a team to achieve our goals. Children in grade 3/4J are engaged in many activities across the curriculum that involve working independently, working in pairs, in small groups or as a whole grade. At this year level students are encouraged to take more responsibility for their own education and participate with increasing responsibility and independence in their own educational advancement. Students are set nightly homework tasks which they are expected to complete in order to better prepare them for homework task requirements in the upper school. This also helps students build on their skills to become better organised, advance forward in their personal learning and better prepare them to become more independent workers.

Students in grade 3/4J are lucky enough to have the school L.O.T.E (Indonesian) teacher as their classroom teacher. This allows students to be immersed in the language on a daily basis. They are always greeted in the morning with a cheerful ‘Selamat Pagi’.

Terms 3 & 4
This semester students investigate inventions and innovations that are useful for everyday living. They will present and complete a research project at school on an inventor and their invention and prepare and present a speech to perform in a ‘Time Machine’ production which will be presented to students and parents. Students will have the opportunity to investigate how different devices operate through a special tinkering day. For a home project they are designing and constructing a vehicle, which is powered by wind energy which they will later present to their peers.

Students will reflect on actions, behaviours, consequences, and emotions that are encountered in everyday life. Through role-play, games, activities, discussions, the multi-media and the Life-Ed van students will become familiar with “themselves” and the people around them. They will participate in activities to help them understand the effects of bullying.
