Art

The art room is centrally located within the school, giving easy access for all those that want to utilize its wide range of facilities. An extensive window area allows for a great deal of natural light to enter the room creating ideal working conditions. A further benefit of the glass area is the magnificent views of the Yarra Valley that it affords, adding further to the positive ‘feel’ of the art room.

Physically, the art room is well set up, with an area of 95 sq. metres, which provides a generous work area for the children. A store room and extensive shelving provide adequate space for supplies and unfinished work. Two sinks allow for the provision of water. The room also boasts a Tetlow electric kiln, which enables the firing of clay work.

The art program offered at Coldstream is both extensive and detailed. The children are encouraged and given the opportunity to explore a range of art forms to communicate ideas, observations and feelings. Art forms experienced by the children in our program include painting, drawing, printmaking, ceramics, collage, mask making, textiles, sculpture and design. The subject matter for the lessons is usually based on the integrated studies theme of each particular grade level.

The students are also encouraged to critically examine works of their own and their peers. They discuss art works in terms of the materials, techniques and processes employed.

Time Allocation: Prep-Year 2 = 2 one hour sessions per week
Years 3-6 = 1 one & a half hour session per week

The children genuinely enjoy their art sessions and eagerly anticipate each lesson. They appreciate having their art work displayed and have the opportunity to have it shown within the school and also externally, in both competitive and non-competitive art shows. Children who demonstrate an intense interest and ability in the subject have the opportunity to receive additional time and assistance to further develop their interests through the school’s gifted and talented program.

The teachers frequently utilize the facilities of the art room to assist with the themes being presented in their grades.

Parent involvement is also welcomed in this subject, whether as general helpers or as instructors, who demonstrate knowledge or skill in a particular area.
