Coldstream Primary School

Curriculum - Student Leadership

At Coldstream Primary School we have an active leadership program where students are encouraged to take on responsibilities and work in partnership with the rest of the school community. Their role is particularly important in the overall running and setting the tone of the school.

In order to decide on who should hold these positions the students are asked to submit a written application complete with referees stating why they should be selected for the leadership position they have chosen.

The following leadership positions are on offer:
School Captain & Vice Captain, House Captains, Office Duty Monitors, Junior School Council President, Vice President & Executive Members, Mail Monitors, Sports Monitors, Music & Art Monitors.

The grade 5/6 students and all staff are invited to put in a 1-5 preference indicating the students they think worthy of the top leadership roles. This information along with lots of discussion by the 5/6 staff and principal is done before the final decision is made. Students are notified by mail of the outcome. A formal badge presentation ceremony is arranged within the first weeks of the school year whereby the badges are presented, usually by our Local Member of Parliament. This ceremony is followed by light refreshments for the recipients and their families. This is a very exciting time for all concerned.

We ask a great deal of our student leadership team. Our School Captains and Vice Captains regularly represent the school in a variety of situations, and are responsible for the organization of assemblies, representing the school at functions and public speaking. The School Captains are also expected to be a member of the Junior School Council & are often required to write articles for the school newsletter.

At the beginning of the year the students holding the top leadership roles have the opportunity to attend the National Young Leaders Conference at Vodafone Arena. This is an invaluable experience where students can meet leaders from other schools and listen to inspiring stories from carefully chosen guest speakers. The students reflect on the experience and apply skills and attributes needed for effective leaders.
